Winter in Memphis is the usual rollercoaster ride: it’s warm, it’s cold; it thunderstorms, it freezes.
One unusually cold snap froze a sheet of ice on the pond, upon which the ducks waddled.
We’ve had a busy month of hand makery.
El-D finished building the pallet wood coffee table.
It is fabulous, of course.
I spent most of December tying knots in string to make little wash cloths.
I paired them with fancy soaps to create little ensembles…
which I wrapped and put under the Christmas tree.
While I was away on errands
Moon Pie unwrapped a few to better lick them.
I like to imagine she barked bubbles afterwards.
Our Fancy Upcoming Events
SoKaN will be joining the Memphis Knit Mafia to yarn bomb the Brooks Museum of Art on Sunday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. This project is in conjunction with the Angels & Tomboys: Girlhood in Nineteenth Century American Art exhibit.
If you’re not familiar with yarn bombing, you can check out this photo essay from Time Magazine by clicking HERE to learn more about this fine art. I am thrilled to pieces to be participating in this event. My new favorite thing to do is to talk loudly about this event in public places. I alternatively refer to it as “my bombing assignment from the Mafia” or “my next exhibit at the art museum,” depending on whether I’m feeling dangerous or fancy. I do this, of course, because I’m actually just a gigantic nerd that gets giddy over knitting. But whatevs! I have my contribution to a bench complete and I’m currently working on a handrail. Wheee! There will be prize drawings, knitting lessons and food trucks on hand, so join us for the fun!
Also, we invite you to come see us on Saturday, March 23 support St. Jude at the Annual St. Jude Springfest at the Millington Civic Center, 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. There will be 13 Bluegrass/Gospel groups, food & craft vendors, McGruff the Crime Dog, a silent auction, games for the kids, Motorcycle Dice Run & much, much more.
Where We’ve Been

Signs on the left were crafted by Monkey See, Lexi Do. Some double as picture frames. Cute idea!
And of course SoKaN had our wares…
It has been an eventful week for SoKaN.
I invite you to visit our wonderful new website: isokan.com Skattur did an awesome job designing it and I am just ecstatic that there is now a picture me in my “boobhat” publically displayed on the Internet for all to see.
Last weekend’s Broad Avenue Art Walk and Art Bark was a blast. The weather was perfect, there was music in the air, “Pawcasso” pups running around in costume, and an abundance of interesting people doing interesting things.
This little Dali dog with his melting clock made my day…
An artist across the aisle captured a couple SoKaNers in his sketchbook.
Skattur added a little holiday flair to her display.
The KnitWits of the bunch are back in action for the season…
And here’s a random picture of a picture I took through the giant earhole of Jimmy “Tightpants,” who looked smashing in his polka dot dress.
Next week SoKaN will be at MEMFIX on Cleveland Street from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. We invite you to come come see us if you’re in the area!
While the archivist has been busy slacking, the Knitters and Knutters have been crafting away. Much has happened over the course of the last four meetings.
A tea and oatmeal breakfast was served with peaches and cream during last week’s morning meeting.
Note: The red and black scarf above is the knit equivalent of a Rorschach Inkblot Test. People will stare and inquire: What are those things? Roses? Aliens? Octopuses? Octopi? Nekkid people?
Knitter Knazi also completed this weird hat:
Little Dude & Mini Nutter made keychains and bracelets.
T-shirt reconstruction was all the rage at one of the meetings. Scissors were snappin and material was flyin. Holes were created in some shirts and patched in others.
Lil’Croche-E with the help of ThunderCoooka created this princess cake for Mini Nutter’s birthday:
